Saturday 19 April: Vergilian Footrace Group Run / Cursus Vergilianus

Join the 121 Fitness Center Running Club for a 5-kilometer group run to honor Vergil. Meet at 121 Fitness Center, next to the windmill on CWRU Campus. Look for new race details in 2015.

Monday 21 April:  Art Contest and Exhibition

1:30 – 3:30 p.m. Art Studio, 2215 Adelbert Road, Cleveland OH 44106

The contest is open to high school and university students and judged by graduate students in Art Education. The exhibition of student and faculty art inspired by Vergil and Greco-Roman civilization. Download rules and registration materials here.

Wednesday 23 April: Roundtable Discussion:  “sunt lacrimae rerum et mentem mortalia tangunt” (“there is compassion for human suffering and mortal affairs touch the mind,” Aen. 1.462)

4:00 – 6:00 p.m. Clark Hall 206

Roundtable discussion of the ethical element in ancient and modern poetics as it relates to epic or narrative poetry.

Thursday 24 April: Continuous public reading of the Aeneid in English / Exhibition of Art Inspired by the Aeneid

8:30 a.m. – 8:30 p.m. Crawford Hall, SAGES Café, 10900 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland OH 44106

All are invited to join in a complete reading of the Aeneid in the English translation by John Dryden. The Vergil Week Art Contest Exhibition will also be taking place at this time.

Friday 25 April: Keynote Address “The Protean Virgil: Book History and the Reception of Aeneid 1 in the Renaissance” by Dr. Craig Kallendorf

Time: 5:00 – 6:00 p.m Clark Hall 206

The Department of Classics is pleased to welcome Dr. Craig Kallendorf to provide the keynote address. Dr. Kallendorf is a Professor of English and Classics at Texas A&M University. The keynote address is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided.
